WHAT A CHARACTER!
Archetype-Icebreaker Activity

Changing your character’s archetype—or adding others—can dramatically change your story. For example, if you need more conflict, introduce another archetype. If your protagonist is too one-dimensional, combine archetypes in that individual. On Friday night, enjoy the following activity for re-evaluating your characters and connecting with your peers!

Following a discussion, each group of four writers will draw a card with a conflict or crisis scenario and four archetypes. You’ll each choose one archetype; then, after brainstorming, you’ll interact with other characters in the group, improvising per what the situation suggests. All enrollees will observe each group’s entertaining improvisation.

(Alternative to being “on stage”: Draw a card identifying two or three archetypes, plus a scenario. Use that information to write a short scene, then read it to the whole group.)

The fun part of this improv is getting into character and seeing what happens as a result. Expect conflict to arise simply because of who is at the scene, especially since these contrasting archetypes are forced to react to each other.

Then, as a group, we’ll discuss what you’ve learned in the improvs. Keep these conclusions in mind as we explore archetypes throughout the weekend. Use this experience as a springboard to develop your own characters and plots!
