I commissioned GOTHIC! because it was the sort of book I would have liked to read [as a teen],” says Noyes. Drawing on dark fantasy and the fairy tale as well as horror and wild humor, ten acclaimed authors—Joan Aiken, M.T. Anderson, Neil Gaiman, Caitlin R. Kiernan, Gregory Maguire, Garth Nix, Celia Rees, Janni Lee Simner, Vivian Vande Velde, and Barry Yourgrau—pay homage to the gothic tale in wide-ranging stories of the supernatural and surreal.

Some of the many awards garnered by this book:

  • An American Library Association (ALA) Best Book for Young Adults
  • A Kirkus Reviews Editors’ Choice
  • A Junior Library Guild Selection
  • A VOYA Best Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Title
  • A New York Public Library Book for the Teen Age

“Ideal for high-school literature classes studying Shelley or Stoker… this collection also provides an excellent opportunity to introduce fans of Koontz, Rice, and King to some of the most imaginative exponents of YA dark fantasy.”— Booklist (starred review)

“It’s notoriously hard to put together a truly scary collection of Hallowe’en tales… A triumph then for Deborah Noyes, whose Gothic collection contains some hugely imaginative, authentically terrifying modern stories.”— Hampstead and Highgate Express (U.K.)

“It’s a collection that would make Poe proud.”— International Reading Association Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy

“Get ready to sleep with the light on!”— Girls’ Life magazine
